Test your mic and Zoom connection

  1. Consider turning off the video if the internet connection may be an issue for you.
  2. To reduce background noise: Unmute yourself when speaking; Mute yourself when not speaking.
  3. Let’s test each one’s connection and mic by “going around the room” and sharing one tip you have about how to go through social distancing or online learning a bit more easily.

    1. In order to best accommodate the transition to remote learning and other critical challenges at this moment, please note that we no long have individual deadlines for the rest of the blog post assignments. Instead, there will be one deadline for all the posts: Mon. May 11 @ noon.
    2. There will likely be a deadline extension once I learn more about the final date for submitting final grades.
    3. You are still encouraged to submit posts according to the original deadlines but not required. I will grade your posts on a weekly basis. You can submit any post whenever you are ready before the final deadline.

How to move on with Blog 5 Audio Profile Assignment


  • How many of you have already done the interview and have the raw file ready for editing?
  • How many of you need to change your interview plan and find a new subject to interview?

If you haven’t done the interview for the audio profile assignment yet, here are two ways to make it easier for you to finish this audio assignment:

  • If you are socially distancing with a roommate or with your family members, it would be the best to interview one of them.
  • If you are socially distancing on your own, I recommend doing a remote interview with a friend or a classmate through Zoom, Google Voice, phone call recording apps on your phone (iPhone; Android), or using a separate device to record your phone call on speaker. (Zoom has the best audio quality compared to Skype. Use the “Record” function in the bottom menu bar.)


  • If taking a portrait becomes an issue for you due to conducting a distant interview, you can be exempt from adding a portrait to your post. However, instead, you will need to ask your interviewee for a picture of their own or other relevant pictures, such as a picture of a place or an object they mention during the interview.
    • If you are doing this, please also remember to include a full-sentence caption with a “Photo courtesy of …[insert name].
    • You can also use publicly available photos relevant to your audio content. If you are doing this, please also remember to include a photo credit line in your caption.
  • Review the assignment instruction document and tips for recording and interviewing from our last post. Many tips about choosing a better location for better audio quality may no longer apply due to the limited options we now have for doing interviews, but other tips about preparing and interviewing are still very useful for making your editing later a much easier task.
  • Needless to say, always practice recording before using your chosen device to do the actual interview and also prep your interviewee with the basics of Zoom if you are using this method.
  • Keep in mind that many students forget the introductory statement that your source needs to provide. Don’t forget that you need a clear complete self-ID from the subject! We need a name and a relevant title or phrase to introduce the audio story. You also need a description relevant to the story or their life. For example, “My name is _______ and I’m going to talk about _______”

Audio Editing with Audacity (Practice Together)

While you are free to edit your audio file in whatever audio-editing program that you want (e.g., Adobe Audition, Garage Band), most students use the free audio-editing program called Audacity. It’s free to download and use on your personal computer. Now, if you don’t have Audacity installed already, please do so right now.

First, let’s review what you need to do in terms of audio editing for this audio profile assignment:

  • Edit your 5-minute audio down to 2 minutes
  • Your voice should not be heard in the 2 minute profile. The only voice that should appear is your interviewee’s voice.
    • Must-Knows: Delete a section; Copy and paste a section; Move a section
  • While you are editing out your voice, keep the flow of the storyline smooth and easy to follow.
    • Optional: Adjust Volume; Fade in/out; Ambient Noise; Add Silence; Convert Stereo to Mono, etc.

We will now jump over to Audacity and review the basic functions that you’ll need for this audio profile project.

  • First, let’s check out some most commonly used functions of Audacity.
  • Then, let’s listen to the first few minutes of the latest episode of Public Lands Podcast
  • We will use this episode to practice the basics of editing in Audacity. While we are listening, download the episode “March 23, 2020: Fracking California?” here to your computer now.

*While we work on this file together, you may want to decrease the volume of this track in your Audacity so you can always listen to Zoom clearly.


  • Always remember to save a backup copy of the original file.
  • Import the audio and save as a project so you go back to whenever you want.
  • Edit out the intro music and the host’s intro statement
    • Delete the section before 00:41.6555s
  • Edit out the host’s verbal response when the interviewee is speaking. (In this episode, the host gives a lot of verbal comment, like “sure,” “yeah,” “uh huh.” These are nearly impossible to edit out. Note that when you do your interview, you want to avoid verbal comment and filler words like “Uh huh.” For more, review our blog post on Week 7 Wednesday.)
    • Delete the section 00:01:00.318s – 00:01:02.212s (time nodes correspond to the track after the last step)
  • Find a stopping point for ending.
    • Delete everything after 00:02:08.976s (time nodes correspond to the track after the last step)
  • Add music intro, outro, and music bed/ambient noise
  • Convert stereo to a mono track
  • Track-Mix-Mix and render
  • Export the audio to mp3

💡Consider these audio editing suggestions:

  1. Decide how you want to organize your story before you begin editing; know what the beginning, middle, and end should be before you begin editing.
  2. The end should bring closure and finality to the interview topic. Don’t end with a statement that leads to more questions from the listener.
  3. Use the zoom feature extensively during your editing, it really helps get the cut to be as flawless as possible.
  4. There are two ways to edit audio: Build or destroy. To build while editing, take a blank audio track and then create an interview from the original. To destroy while editing, take the original interview and cut it down.
  5. While editing, write down the points in the track that you’re working on. That way when you go back and listen to it, you can listen for the cut/transition and move things around faster by referencing those breaks in your notes.
  6. Always save the original audio file separate from the file that you’re currently editing. Also consider saving “editions” of your audio file such that each audio editing session that you engage in is a unique file. That way, if you make a grievous error, then you can revert to the next most saved/updated/edited file.
